As part of this year’s anniversary celebration, “65 Years of the Heinrich-Fischer-Bad Outdoor Pool,” the City of Hanau is presenting an exhibition and an accompanying film that highlight the outdoor pool as a place of encounter, participation, and democracy in action.
It represents not only a venue for sports and recreation, but also an important social and democratic space where the city’s community comes together quite naturally.
The exhibition consists of ten display panels set up in the entrance foyer of the outdoor pool, taking visitors on a journey through time from the beginnings of public swimming 65 years ago in Hanau to the present day. The focus is not only on architectural developments, but above all on the people, their memories, and the special atmosphere of the outdoor pool as a place of encounter. The exhibition’s content ranges from the early river bathing facilities on the Main and Kinzig rivers, through the construction of Germany’s first combined indoor and outdoor pool on Eugen-Kaiser-Straße, to personal memories from eyewitnesses. It also addresses social developments, such as the role of the outdoor pool as an inclusive space where people of diverse backgrounds come together, and changes in leisure habits since the 1960s.
The exhibition is part of the multi-day opening programme with which the city of Hanau is reopening the outdoor pool from May 13 to 17.
