The Eltville Media Library invites you to join the exploration of the theme of Life on the Margins. Documentary photographer Florian Bachmeier takes you to the margins with 63 images from the years 1996 to 2026. He takes his camera to places rarely seen by headlines — such as Afghanistan, Mauritania, Venezuela, and the borders of the European Union—where refugees seek safety.
The photo exhibition tells the story of life, conflicts, and encounters in border regions. Here, different identities, languages, religions, and political systems collide. Here, people must constantly negotiate with one another—about language, resources, belonging, or history. Democracy is built on the same principles: recognizing differences and establishing common rules for coexistence. What can we learn from life in border regions for democratic coexistence?
