History, Architecture, and the Spectacular Preservation of a Unique Historic Landmark
In 1965, the Kelkheim City Council voted to demolish the Old Town Hall in Kelkheim-Münster. The half-timbered building was slated to make way for a wide street. Massive public protests prevented this at the very last minute. As a result, the Altmünster Citizens’ Association was founded in 1975 to advocate for the neighborhood’s livable development. Thus, the Old Town Hall was completely renovated in 1982 and converted for use by the association and as a restaurant. The building, erected in 1789 by Maria Theresia Freifräulein von Bettendorf, is today considered a unique structure in the heart of Münster.
A guided tour with Marianne Bopp and Dr. Kirstin Funke.
Fee €5 per person, which goes to support the Kelkheim Museum; free for those under 18.
