Poetry Slam is sometimes grandly described as a “modern poets’ contest” – at its core is the spoken word. People of all ages and backgrounds compete with their own original texts, whether poetry or prose, rhymed or unrhymed. These texts can belong to any genre: humorous, serious, reflective, and often socially critical – the main rule is that they are self-written and performed in no longer than seven minutes. The audience decides who wins the evening. At the Democracy Slam, everything revolves around the themes of future, life, and participation.
Julia Zimmermann (she/her) has been performing on poetry slam stages for over 10 years. At 16, she discovered poetry slam through a writing workshop at her school. Today, the social worker regularly organizes slam events herself, including the Oberursel Slam (@orschelerslam) at the Kulturcafé Windrose. Over the past two years, she has also been part of the organizing team of the HessenSlam, the statewide annual poetry slam championship in Hesse.
