HumanNature

2026

HumanNature is an interdisciplinary project on the design of urban open spaces at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung. Its aim is to create an urban space that makes human–nature relationships visible, tangible and open to new ways of thinking, using an inner-city brownfield site as a case study.

In collaboration with local residents and other stakeholders, spaces are being developed within the framework of an “organism democracy”, where relationships between humans and nature can be reimagined and experienced in new ways. At the Senckenberg Museum Frankfurt site, experimental learning environments, artistic interventions and participatory design processes will emerge — with plants, animals and microorganisms acting as co-agents within the urban environment. Activities in the summer term 2026 will also include a public lecture series hosted by the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research, as well as interactive formats exploring the theme of urban nature. Engaging with the lives, ways of living and living conditions of different species — and adopting a multispecies perspective — encourages an attitude that seeks to design urban spaces not only for, but with all living beings.

The project is led by the artists’ collective Club Real in cooperation with Prof. Dr Jan Dieterle and Prof. Dr Yari Or (Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences), as well as Dr Julia Krohmer (Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung).
