Right in the heart of Bockenheim, next to the Senckenberg Tower on Robert-Mayer-Straße, lies a fallow that barely anyone notices. At first glance: a neglected parking lot. In reality: a place with enormous potential – for biodiversity, for the neighbourhood, for a new way of living together.
Because fallows are more valuable than they look. They offer space for nature to unfold undisturbed – with rare plants, insects and organisms that have long since disappeared elsewhere. Resilient pioneer plants, praying mantises, seeds that have been lying dormant under gravel for years: they are all waiting to become visible.
That is exactly what the Organismendemokratie Frankfurt sets out to do in the Parliament of Living Beings. The idea: all living beings – not just humans – should have a say. Plants, animals, fungi, even bacteria and microorganisms become equal citizens with a political voice. We humans carry their voice as advocates into the conversation – rethinking the city as a shared habitat for all.
On 27 June 2026, the Parliament of Living Beings convenes in Frankfurt.
From the over 200 species of plants, fungi, animals and microorganisms living here, 15 have been selected and curated. 15 people take on the role of advocates to put forward ideas and demands for the future development of the site, debate them and vote on a ranking of proposals.
