In large cities, many people live in big residential complexes. Their so-called “setback green” areas still receive far too little attention, even though they hold great potential for biodiversity, climate adaptation, and quality of life.

The lecture will show how such green spaces in residential neighborhoods—often still consisting of short lawns, a few hedges, and conifers—can be designed to be natural, species-rich, and user-friendly. Practical concepts for flower meadows, hedges, ponds, green façades, and shared communal green spaces will be presented.

A special focus will be on combining ecological quality with social function: How can green spaces serve as meeting points while also providing habitats for plants and animals? And what role does comprehensive communication play? Using examples from municipalities and housing associations, the lecture highlights the factors that are crucial for successful implementation—from gaining the support of all stakeholders to planning, maintenance, and involving residents. The lecture emphasizes that nature-based design is not a luxury, but a key element of sustainable, climate-resilient urban development.

The lectures will take place in person at 7:30 PM in the Grüner Hörsaal, Robert-Mayer-Straße 2. Online participation is also possible via Zoom.

Biologist Corinna Hölzer is a co-founder of the Mensch und Natur Foundation, which has been promoting species-rich and nature-based habitats since 2010. The foundation focuses on providing information and inspiration to motivate a wide range of people and groups to take action themselves.
