The management of urban green spaces has a decisive impact on insect biodiversity. Mowing regimes in particular determine whether meadows, roadside verges or parks function as viable habitats or become ecological traps for the insects that live there. Key factors include the timing, height and frequency of mowing, as well as the equipment used.
This lecture provides an overview of current scientific findings on the effects of mowing on insect populations and presents practical examples of how insect-friendly mowing strategies can be successfully implemented in urban contexts — from staggered mowing and mosaic structures to extensively managed areas.
In addition to ecological effects, the lecture also addresses organisational, design and communication aspects: How can new maintenance concepts be integrated into municipal workflows? How can public acceptance be fostered? The lecture highlights that even small adjustments in maintenance practices can have a significant impact and serve as a key instrument for enhancing biodiversity in urban spaces — often with less effort and lower costs.
The lectures take place at 7:30 pm in person at the Green Lecture Hall, Robert-Mayer-Straße 2. Online participation via Zoom is also possible.

The biologist Nadja Simons is Junior Professor of Applied Biodiversity Research at the University of Würzburg, where she investigates the role of biodiversity in human-managed environments. Her research focuses in particular on the impacts of management decisions on animal communities.
