Blue-green infrastructure connects green spaces and water bodies into multifunctional networks and is considered a key concept for climate-resilient cities. Parks, rivers, rainwater management, and green open spaces work together—ecologically, climatically, and socially.
Beyond its effects on biodiversity and microclimate, its impact on people is particularly significant: recreation, health, experiences of nature, and the strengthening of the human–nature relationship. Drawing on international examples—including the uncovering and renaturalization of waterways—the presentation demonstrates how blue-green approaches are implemented across different cultural and climatic contexts. It makes clear that blue-green infrastructure is more than a technical response to climate change: it opens up new possibilities for designing livable cities and brings together ecological functions with social quality.

The ecologist Leonie Fischer heads the Institute of Landscape Planning and Ecology at the University of Stuttgart. Her research focuses on the ecology of human-influenced habitats in both tropical and temperate regions, with a particular emphasis on urban ecology and urban renaturalization. A key aspect of her work is its strong practical orientation, aiming to bridge research and real-world application.
