As a relatively new element of “urban reforestation,” Tiny Forests are currently attracting attention everywhere. Several such mini-forests have recently been planted in Frankfurt as well, drawing significant interest from all actors in the city—residents, community initiatives, politicians, and municipal departments—because they bring together topics such as climate adaptation, biodiversity, urban design, and citizen participation in new ways.

For her documentary The Makers of the Mini-Forests, American filmmaker Angelina Lee followed ten organisations across five European countries that plant mini-forests using the Miyawaki method. In Germany, the non-profit association Citizens Forests is featured, placing particular emphasis on involving citizens in public planting activities to protect the climate and biodiversity. In addition to planting projects in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, the film also shows impressions from Japan, where the method of the plant sociologist Akira Miyawaki has been applied for nearly 50 years.

The film, released in 2024 (running time 1:21), will be shown in its original version with German subtitles. This will be followed by a discussion with members of the Frankfurt initiative MainWäldchen, a representative from the scientific community, and someone from the City of Frankfurt (to be confirmed).
