Kultur im Gepäck PART2 – Wir alle sind Deutschland

The project Kultur im Gepäck PART 2 – WE are all Germany promotes Germany’s democracy in the spirit of freedom and diversity – through a combination of studio work and participatory activities, exhibition, performance, as well as readings with panel discussion.

The project consists of two components:

Component 1 – I (Self):
People with different ethnic backgrounds design the inside of a suitcase. They share their personal stories, memories, fears, hopes, and wishes with us. They provide an insight into their own cultural world, which is shaped in a multifaceted way by different cultures, roots, and living environments. Individuals are being sought to design these suitcases.

Component 2 – WE (Collective):
Individuals, institutions, independent groups, and educational organisations jointly fill a large, colourful glass suitcase with many individually designed suitcases. This makes it visible: everyone in Germany contributes with their own personal culture to our diverse and vibrant community. The individual suitcase serves as a metaphor for the I, while the many suitcases together imply the WE.

In an oversized suitcase – as a symbol for Germany – everyone finds an individual place and protection for their freedom. When this suitcase is opened, its treasures, souvenirs, memories, and personal life stories can be seen, discovered, and shared by others.
