From the story: “The Candy”: Poland, World War II. After the Germans invade Gdynia — a city on the Baltic Sea near Gdańsk — Halina is forced to leave her apartment for the occupying forces and move with her two children into a barrack on the outskirts of the city. But this story is above all about Agnieszka, Halina’s young daughter, whose encounter with a German officer will stay with her for the rest of her life. Author Joanna Manc tells true stories from a time that deeply shaped her family.

Joanna Manc was born in 1959 in Gdynia and emigrated to Germany in 1968. She studied German, Slavic, and Romance languages and literature. Since 1994, she has worked as a translator of Polish literature into German and writes in both languages herself. Her poems have appeared in several Polish cultural magazines and in a German-Polish anthology. Two of her book translations have received awards, and one of her poems won second prize at the International Poetry Competition in Dún Laoghaire. For several years, she has also been one of the authors of the “Literaturclub der Frauen aus aller Welt.” She lives in Frankfurt am Main.
