British artist and filmmaker Hetain Patel explores generational change in his British-Gujarati family through movement-based investigations. His performance is based on interviews with women from his family, who speak in Gujarati about inheritance, loss, and the future. It reflects what mother tongue (Mathroo Basha in Gujarati) means to Patel: loss, change, and tradition. Mathroo Basha draws on rituals from Patel’s family of origin and physically traces the emotional realities that arise from generational change.

Three works by Patel are featured in the exhibition MISHPOCHA. The Art of Collaboration: Phantom Family (2023), Cavalier Phui & Ben (2023), and Baa’s Gold (Grandchildren) (2021). After the performance, curator Dr. Franziska Krah leads a tour of the exhibition. London-based artist Hetain Patel addresses themes of identity and freedom in his films, images, sculptures, and performances, combining choreography and text with popular culture. Dr. Franziska Krah is curator of the exhibition MISHPOCHA. The Art of Collaboration and director of the Familie Frank Center at the Jewish Museum.

Admission €10, reduced €5, including exhibition entry.

Registration is requested.
