Eine Kirche als Wohnzimmer des Quartiers
Atelier Markgraph, Prof. Lars-Uwe Bleher und die Hochschule Darmstadt (h_da)
The Weißfrauen Diakonie Church is to become an open place within the urban living space—inviting all people in the neighborhood to meet and shape their shared environment together: a church as the “living room of the district.” The redesign process itself is participatory: everyone interested is encouraged to contribute ideas, needs, and wishes, helping to shape both the conceptual and spatial design. Architects and spatial designers will build on these impulses to develop new design approaches for the existing church.
The goal is to create a vibrant meeting place that makes democratic culture visible and tangible. The church will serve as a space that fosters civic engagement, dialogue, and participation—through collaboration between Diakonie, the church, and the urban community. In this way, it contributes to building an open, democratic society that connects diverse groups and encourages collective activity.
The redesigned church space will remain flexible and adaptable, allowing it to continually reinvent itself. It will thus offer future generations a place for exchange, creative use, and democratic negotiation of shared interests. The project may also serve as a model for future church uses within the EKHN.
