Kollektiv Frankfurter Künstlerinnen und Künstler

...

With the exhibition come together, not only a new exhibition project begins, but also a new era for the Weißfrauen Diakonie Church in Frankfurt’s Bahnhofsviertel. For the first time, a newly formed group under the name Kuratierenkollektiv WFDK is taking over the artistic direction, setting a clear signal for the future of this unique exhibition venue.

Five Frankfurt-based artists – Jörg Ahrnt, Jens Lehmann, Jutta Obenhuber, Vroni Schwegler and Martina Wolf – share the curatorial and organisational responsibility for this exhibition. With their collective approach, they aim to bring fresh impulses to the exhibition programme.

The Weißfrauen Diakonie Church has a rich history as a site for art: since the installation of the lettering MENSCH 21 years ago, initiated by curator Gerald Hintze and artist Mirek Macke, the church has become an integral part of Frankfurt’s art and cultural scene. This first artistic intervention marked the beginning of an ambitious exhibition programme, through which numerous artists from the region and beyond have shaped the church’s profile as an open space for contemporary art over the past two decades.

After the early death of Gerald Hintze in 2012, Thomas Kober continued the exhibition programme. A later reorientation of the church led to protests within Frankfurt’s art scene, resulting in extensive discussions and the development of a new concept for future exhibitions.

Opening on 24 April: an exhibition as a living archive

The exhibition come together, opening on 24 April, marks the beginning of this new phase. At the same time, it serves as a tribute to the work of Gerald Hintze and Thomas Kober. For this special project, all artists who have exhibited at the Weißfrauen Diakonie Church since 2005 were invited.

A total of 46 artistic positions come together within a specially developed exhibition architecture. The presentation brings together an impressive range of works, including pieces by internationally recognised artists. The exhibition thus becomes a living archive of recent Frankfurt art history.

At the same time, the concept opens up new perspectives. The exhibition’s democratic structure, driven by the commitment of the participating artists, makes come together an open and dynamic experience. It is also an active contribution to the World Design Capital programme, underlining the importance of the Weißfrauen Diakonie Church as a place of exchange, encounter and art.

This exhibition is supported not only by the Evangelical Regional Association but also by the City of Frankfurt (Department of Culture) and Künstlerhilfe.
