Die Stuttgarter Weissenhofsiedlung 1927-2027+

The Weissenhofsiedlung was built in 1927 as part of the Werkbund exhibition Die Wohnung under the artistic direction of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. With 17 international architects, including Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, it became a manifesto of Modernism and is still regarded today as a milestone in architectural history as well as an international point of reference for issues of housing and urban development. The settlement bears the European Heritage Label; the two houses designed by Le Corbusier have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016.

In 2027, the Weissenhof Estate will celebrate its 100th anniversary. To mark this occasion, a new, comprehensive program of educational and experiential activities is being developed. With the Weissenhof.Forum, the state capital of Stuttgart is building a new visitor center at the entrance to the estate. In conjunction with Le Corbusier’s twin house—the only publicly accessible house within the otherwise residential estate—there will be an expanded and diverse program on architectural history and education in the future.

The ernst-may-gesellschaft was founded in 2003 by concerned citizens; as an association, its mission is to document and preserve “New Frankfurt” and to bring it into the current discourse on architecture and urban planning.
