Die Hamburger Jarrestadt

Jarrestadt in Hamburg was built in the late 1920s in the Neues Bauen style and is one of the most outstanding residential developments of its time. A defining feature is the dark red brick, a traditional North German building material.

One hundred years later, action is needed both on the buildings and in public spaces. Jarrestadt was therefore included in the federal program “National Urban Development Projects” in 2021. Since then, foundational principles and approaches for its future development have been developed, and building renovations have been piloted. Currently, the central green corridor in the neighborhood is being renovated, with the inauguration planned for this fall. The entire project, which is being implemented by a cross-agency team, is accompanied by a comprehensive process of value communication and public relations.

The ernst-may-gesellschaft was founded in 2003 by concerned citizens; as an association, its mission is to document and preserve “Neues Frankfurt” and to bring it into the current discourse on architecture and urban planning.
