As key places of learning within neighborhoods, schools play a vital role in fostering community. Together with their school communities, they shape everyday life, establish shared rules and rituals, and act as spaces where democratic values are practiced and experienced.

Increasingly, schools are opening up to their surrounding neighborhoods, connecting their educational offerings with the needs of the wider urban community. This shift brings new challenges for the design and use of buildings and open spaces. The symposium explores how schools and municipalities are approaching these changes in practice, what experiences they have gained, and what new perspectives are emerging.
