Talk

The symposium encourages people to think about an expanded concept of public space for an open society and to understand it as an important design theme.

This is not only about public spaces in the legal sense, but also about spaces that are generally accessible and offer special services that are important for coexistence – for experiencing community, cultivating exchange and reassuring oneself of one's own role in society. These can be spaces that are intended for a specific group or programme, offering shelter for a community or for specific uses, both indoors and outdoors: churches, kiosks, libraries, parks or sports fields, for example. Their role is made visible in order to strengthen them and expand their offerings.

The symposium offers an overview of approaches to the topic and how to deal with the resulting questions. It examines the interplay between space and community from a wide variety of perspectives.

With:

  • Jan Fries Urbanist, construction transition activist, regional planner, Munich | Walking, speculating, mapping & Activist appropriation of spatial potential
  • Ragna Körby Urban redevelopment + local renewal, Offenbach/Kaiserslautern | Libraries: Third, fourth and fifth places
  • Aida Nejad Studio Malta, Stuttgart | Public space from a (post-)migrant perspective
  • Dagmar Pelger coopdisco, Berlin & Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, Dessau | Sociocultural places as spatial commons
  • Lisa Marie Zander, projektbüro, Hamburg | Existing stock, everyday life, use. The potential of the city

Participation in the symposium is open to all interested parties, including those outside the university. No registration is required.

Only a few parking spaces are available on site.
