What is really on your mind right now as a design professional? Outdated role models, growing uncertainties, a profession in flux – in the workshop ‘Eyes Open and Full Steam Ahead’, we’ll shed light on precisely these issues. Together, we’ll challenge clichés, break down outdated perceptions and develop new perspectives for a design practice that works.

As part of her Master’s thesis, Patrizia Schaub explored the self-image and external perception of design professionals. Practising designers were interviewed about their understanding of design, their experiences in the industry and the challenges they currently face.

This work led to the creation, in collaboration with SinnGestalten – a collective of six transformation designers – of the workshop “Eyes Open and Full Steam Ahead – From Nonsense to Make Sense”. During the Campus Festival, a participatory wall was created on which the concerns of design professionals were made visible. In the

workshop, this collection is transformed collectively: clichés, fears and outdated images are questioned, discussed and symbolically torn down.

With the help of reflection cards, discussions and collaborative idea generation, new perspectives, visions and concrete courses of action emerge for a design practice characterised by solidarity, self-confidence and sustainability.

The workshop is open to everyone.

Patrizia Schaub completed a Master’s degree in Transformation Design at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences. In her Master’s thesis, Patrizia Schaub surveyed over 130 designers about their self-image. This has resulted in a game featuring 100 question cards on values, attitudes and responsibility, which is on display at the campus exhibition.

Anyone wishing to find out more about her work can listen to a podcast with her here.
