The exhibition ‘How Do We Want to Live?’ explores different concepts of coexistence in European cities. The artworks examine these living conditions, their historical evolution, and the social, political and architectural concepts that shape our urban lives – or prompt us to rethink them.

“How do we want to live?” With this central question, the DZ BANK Art Foundation turns its attention to how we coexist in cities. Against the backdrop of current urban development projects, the exhibition brings together artistic perspectives on architecture, communal spaces and nature, as well as the people in the city. What do we need to design shared spaces in a diverse city in such a way that we can live together more harmoniously? It is not only the housing shortage and the affordability of housing that concern people in large cities in Germany, Europe and the world, but also how communal living and a liveable environment can be shaped.

The artistic perspectives demonstrate how architecture and urban development are closely linked to social issues. Historical, political and social housing concepts continue to shape our cities to this day. They encourage us to rethink how we live together in the city.

The DZ BANK Art Foundation was established as a nonprofit limited liability company (GmbH) to make the DZ BANK collection accessible to the public on a broader scale. Socially relevant topics are highlighted in three rotating exhibitions each year. The diverse educational program encourages dialogue and stimulates thought: art tours for all age groups, workshops, professional development for teachers, programs for students, and collaborations with schools and universities.
