Spanish Design Pavilion

The Spanish Design Pavilion is a temporary architectural installation conceived as an open cultural space for the city.

Installed in the garden of the Instituto Cervantes Frankfurt and presented as part of WDC 2026, the pavilion hosts a programme of public events and invites visitors to experience architecture, creativity and culture in a shared public space. The project also serves as a platform for exchange between Spain and Germany within the international programme of WDC 2026, showcasing perspectives from the Spanish art and cultural landscape. Exhibitions, concerts and expert talks form the supporting programme.

In the context of World Design Capital 2026 — which highlights the role of design in promoting democracy and better coexistence in cities — the project explores how architecture can create more open and participatory urban spaces.

The walk-through installation ‘DRAC’ in the garden of the Instituto Cervantes Frankfurt embodies, from May to October, the architectural legacy of Antoni Gaudí and thus the country’s creative innovative power. The dragon of Park Güell in Barcelona — Drac in Catalan — appears as an abstract narrative element and connects visitors with Gaudí’s legacy.

Its modular structure, made of wood and ceramics, allows the space to be transformed without altering it permanently, and serves as a platform for cultural activities.

Inspired by the principles of the New European Bauhaus (beauty, sustainability and inclusion), the Spanish Design Pavilion brings together architecture, design and public life.

With a programme of cultural and creative industry events in May and June, the pavilion becomes the ‘living room’ of the World Design Capital: an open space where design, music and cuisine come together at numerous events. In the event of bad weather, these will take place in the hall of the Instituto Cervantes Frankfurt.

The “DRAC Gaudí” installation can be viewed free of charge during regular opening hours (Monday to Thursday, 9am–6pm; Friday 9am–3pm; call 069 71374970 for details of occasional extended opening hours or Saturday openings). From 30 April to 30 October, guided tours and specialist events will also take place.

The project is initiated by ICEX Spain Trade and Investment and the Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy in Düsseldorf (Ofecome Düsseldorf), in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes Frankfurt. Together, these institutions combine economic and cultural expertise to promote exchange and cooperation between Spain and Germany within the framework of World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026.

Vom 30. April bis 30. Oktober 2026 ist die begehbare Skulptur im Garten des Instituts errichtet. Der Pavillon mit einer Fläche von 150m² wurde von dem Valencianischen Architekten José Ramón Tramoyeres entworfen und dem ebenfalls aus Valencia stammenden Holzspezialisten Manolo García gebaut.

Seine modulare Struktur aus Holz und Keramik ermöglicht es, den Ort zu transformieren, ohne ihn dauerhaft zu verändern, und dient als Plattform für kulturelle Aktivitäten. Inspiriert von den Prinzipien des New European Bauhaus (Schönheit, Nachhaltigkeit und Inklusion) verbindet der Spanish Design Pavilion Architektur, Design und öffentliches Leben.

Der Pavillon wird mit einem Programm aus Kultur und Kreativwirtschaft in den Monaten Mai  und Juni zum „Wohnzimmer“ der World Design Capital: ein offener Raum, in dem Design, Musik, und Kulinarik bei zahlreichen Events zusammenkommen. Bei schlechter Witterung werden sie im Saal des  Instituto Cervantes Frankfurt stattfinden.

Die Installation „DRAC Gaudí“ kann zu den  regulären Öffnungszeiten kostenlos besichtigt werden (Montag bis Donnerstag, 9–18 Uhr,  Freitag 9–15, unter 069 71374970 sind punktuell längere Öffnungszeiten oder  Samstagsöffnungen zu erfahren). Vom 30. April bis zum 30. Oktober finden außerdem  Führungen und Fachveranstaltungen statt.

Das Projekt wird von ICEX Spanien Export und Investitionen sowie der Wirtschafts- und Handelsabteilung der Spanischen Botschaft in Düsseldorf (Ofecome Düsseldorf) in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Instituto Cervantes Frankfurt initiiert. Gemeinsam verbinden die Institutionen wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Kompetenzen und fördern Austausch und Zusammenarbeit zwischen Spanien und Deutschland im Rahmen der World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026.
