OFF THE WALL

The Wallanlagen were increasingly repurposed as the city adapted to car traffic. The project Off the Wall aims to temporarily activate these traffic-dominated areas and test creative uses.

The goal is to transform them into spaces that promote community, exchange, and ecological mobility. Initial project ideas—such as a stage at the Rechneigraben with the Bridges Chamber Orchestra, a frisbee hotel, or theater workshops on urban planning—have already been submitted. All installations are connected via existing pedestrian and bicycle paths, but can also be supplemented by an additional lane from the street. This could turn the “back” of the Wallanlagen into a “front,” significantly enhancing the quality of the local recreation area while linking the city center with green and river spaces. By fostering partnerships between students from the creative sector and urban actors, the project actively involves diverse interest groups in shaping public space and developing creative solutions to urban challenges. Each intervention is equipped with a wheelbarrow as a mobile communication tool. The event will kick off with a lecture evening and a group walk in October 2025, which will also serve as a networking meeting for universities.

The project is a collaboration between bb22 architects + urban planners, Making Frankfurt, regional universities and local stakeholders.
