Projekt Dornbusch
...
On August 23, 2026, Dornbuschplatz will transform into a vibrant summer street, marking the highlight of the project “Together We Grow Wings” as part of World Design Capital 2026. Following an intensive participatory process and a collaborative building weekend, the neighborhood will celebrate the inauguration of newly created urban furniture and shading structures.
A space that previously offered little opportunity to stay and connect is reimagined as an open meeting place for all generations. The co-designed and co-built elements – from seating and raised garden beds to a creative shading solution – will be experienced in their full impact for the first time. The summer street event focuses on connection, exchange, and the shared use of public space. The street will be closed to traffic, creating room for a wide range of activities: a bicycle course invites children and families to participate, while music, shared meals in cooperation with Foodsharing, creative workshops, and play and movement activities bring the space to life.
Local actors and initiatives actively shape the program. A special highlight is the official inauguration of the redesigned square, demonstrating what is possible when a community plans, builds, and takes responsibility together. The day makes visible how ideas can become tangible places – places that foster connection, invite people to linger, and are sustained by the community over time. The summer street event is therefore not only a celebration, but also a strong statement for participatory practice, sustainable urban development, and active neighborhood life in Dornbusch.
The initiative “Project Dornbusch – Together We Grow Wings” is committed to fostering connection and community in Frankfurt’s Dornbusch district. Together with local residents, Dornbuschplatz is being reimagined and redesigned. Event partners include organizations such as foodsharing Frankfurt am Main e.V., which distributes rescued food through volunteer efforts, and Kidical Mass Frankfurt, which advocates for children in Frankfurt to be able to ride their bikes safely and without fear. Every safe bike ride by a child is a step toward a more livable, calmer, and climate-friendly city.
