The vegetable heroes grow fruit and vegetables collectively in 18 community gardens and on the Frankfurt City Farm according to permaculture principles.

Four of the gardens are ‘PermaCulture Islands’ – community gardens with a neighbourhood focus, where urban agriculture is practised according to the regenerative principles of permaculture with the involvement of volunteer residents from the neighbourhood, usually in cooperation with a local stakeholder who provides the land.

This is also the case with the Fechenheim Care Garden: Over the past three years, a thriving garden has been created on the once barren grounds of a retirement home in cooperation with the Frankfurt Association. A weekly gardening group meets here for the residents, neighbours get involved in hands-on activities, and a permanent gardening team regularly tends to the flowers, vegetable plants and biodiversity elements. During the guided tour of the Fechenheim Care Garden, the project managers present the project, show opportunities for participation, provide insights into permaculture – and offer many constructive ideas on how places like this can make Frankfurt more vibrant, greener and more liveable. So far, this kind of cooperation project only exists in Frankfurt and is unique. But this project is intended to serve as a model for many more PermaCultureIslands throughout the city!

Afterwards, participants can try their hand at gardening themselves—and experience firsthand what gardening in a community has to do with democracy.
