Climate on Trial: Repression Instead of Climate Protection?

House searches across 15 properties, frozen bank accounts, and the accusation of forming a criminal organization: The state’s actions against "Last Generation" mark a new level of escalation. While the climate crisis breaks worldwide records, civil disobedience is being met with the full force of criminal law.

This criminalization exposes a political deadlock. Instead of consistently implementing legally binding climate targets, the state is disciplining those who highlight political failure. The charges under Section 129 of the German Criminal Code signal an authoritarian shift that threatens not only the climate movement but democratic protest culture as a whole. This raises a fundamental question: Are basic rights being curtailed to protect the interests of the fossil fuel industry?

In this debate, Carla Hinrichs (spokesperson for Last Generation) and Rupert von Plottnitz (lawyer and former Hessian Minister of the Environment) analyze the legal attacks on civil society. Together, they discuss necessary resistance, the erosion of the rule of law, and paths toward a transformation that stands firm against state repression.
