Caring for relatives is one of the greatest challenges of our coexistence: Those who care for a loved one perform an enormous task every day – often at the expense of their own time, energy, and joy of life. And yet, often in giving, a gift is revealed: moments of deep closeness and a sense of purpose that sustains.
This exhibition aims to bring the hidden into the light. It tells of the weight and beauty of care, of exhaustion and fulfillment, of despair and tenderness. The photographs by Karsten Thormaehlen seek to give a face to these experiences – to the efforts, sacrifices, and exhaustion of caregivers, but also to those rare moments of joy, closeness, and fulfillment that can emerge in caregiving. The German photographer, internationally known for his portraits of centenarians and his projects against age discrimination, has touched audiences worldwide through his work in museums, magazines, and exhibitions.
