Frankfurt's water kiosks, also known as Trinkhallen or kiosks, have been an integral part of the cityscape since the second half of the 19th century and serve not only as sales outlets but also as meeting places for locals. They are not only places of consumption but also cultural symbols that reflect the identity and charm of the city of Frankfurt.
In the summer semester of 2024, students at the UAS worked on the planning and construction of an inclusive water kiosk with the aim of creating a kiosk ‘for everyone’.
The WandelBar is a modular and transportable box and is characterised by its ability to be transformed into different states. When closed, the box is a 3x3m cube with a luminous lantern. During the day, when open, the box transforms and can be opened and expanded into an inclusive water house for everyone using folding and sliding mechanisms. The project is now scheduled for completion in 2026, with the kiosk to be built by the students in collaboration with the timber construction company Baumgarten. As a drinking hall and activity space, it will be accessible to everyone in the public space.
The project is being carried out by Prof. Stefanie Eberding and Prof. Dr. Caroline Günther together with Kiana Khederzadeh, Mike Klimczak, and students from the Master’s programmes in Inclusive Design and Architecture at FRA-UAS – in cooperation with Dietrich Untertrifaller Architekten, Frankfurt, and BAUMGARTEN GmbH.
