The Saalbaustraße 37 project promotes cultural and social diversity in urban spaces by sustainably using vacant areas and activating neighborhood spaces.
The formerly empty adult store was renovated, redesigned, and creatively programmed by the association das blumen e.V.. The goal is to enable encounters, participation, and collective engagement, provide spaces for collaborative work and free cultural events, and strengthen local networks.
As part of WDC 2026, various formats are planned, including participatory workshops, a street festival, and an inspirational lecture. These create spaces for exchange, communal learning, and public encounters.
During the Design Build Workshop, participants will collaboratively create long-term usable infrastructure for Saalbaustraße under guidance, while gaining practical and hands-on skills. The street festival Common Ground brings together the neighborhood, including local businesses and cultural creators. On this day, the street becomes a collective space for encounters, with music acts, culinary offerings, and interactive activities encouraging dialogue and participation. The keynote lecture on design and democracy combines critical knowledge with civic perspectives.
das blumen has been part of the cultural scene since 2006. By utilising vacant properties and temporary concepts for interim use, we aim to enrich public life. das blumen is a non-profit meeting place and space for collaborative work and cultural events. das blumen is a non-profit meeting place and space for collaborative work and cultural events.
