Conventional street lighting causes ecological damage through light pollution, disrupts the day-night rhythm of humans, plants, and animals, and consumes significant resources due to complex installation. At the same time, many places—especially remote ones—suffer from a lack of light, creating safety risks.

Renewable energies remain underutilised or invisible in public space, leaving much potential untapped. As part of WDC 2026, Tobias Trübenbacher and Andreas Lang are developing Main Light, a self-sufficient, climate-neutral lighting solution for public space. Using innovative solar films, easy installation without power lines, and an insect-friendly light spectrum, it provides a sustainable alternative that saves resources while bringing light to previously dark areas.

The pilot project will be implemented in 2026 along the bike path between Offenbach and Frankfurt, strengthening cycling infrastructure. Further collaborations, including with Radraum Offenbach, are planned. Main Light makes sustainable energy generation visible and tangible in everyday life— serving as a positive design model. With vibrant colors and contemporary patterns, the luminaire enriches the urban landscape and becomes a flagship for the WDC project.

Beyond its ecological, social, and infrastructural benefits, Main Light will also create a space for education and exchange: workshops and digital formats will foster discourse on light, energy, safety, and design.
