Die Kunststation Hauptwache transforms vacant display cases in Frankfurt’s Hauptwache subway station into a public exhibition space for student art. The project offers young people a visible stage in the heart of the city, encouraging them to engage artistically with topics such as environment, sustainability, and urban design.

The exhibitions are created in collaboration with schools from Frankfurt and Offenbach as well as external artists. Due to strict fire safety regulations, the students work with unconventional materials such as glass, ceramics, and metal—often in external workshops, for example at the Museum Angewandte Kunst.

This unique form of cultural education fosters creativity, a sense of responsibility, and participation in urban society. Kunststation Hauptwache exemplifies how design and democratic engagement can merge: here, design becomes an aesthetic, social, and political tool for young people to actively shape their city.
