Those who use resources intelligently win. Again and again. What is used is preserved and depletes far more slowly.

Calculations show that the lifespan of products can already be significantly extended through smart use and refurbishment. For furniture, lifetimes can be tripled, and in optimized models even increased tenfold. In the Netherlands, bridges have seen their service life extended from 50 to up to 200 years. More value created from the same resources. Less consumption. This is the shift toward usage.

Things are made available for intelligent use, at the right time, in the right quantity, in the right quality, and in the right place. Coordinated through information. Optimized by artificial intelligence. In networks that learn who needs what, when, and where. This is the foundation for enabling circular and sharing based models to truly break through.

A revolution is in full swing, even if we do not always call it that. Think about how we moved from owning music to simply accessing it. We used to buy vinyl records, then CDs. Today, most people do not own music at all in a physical sense. Services like Spotify give us instant access to more than 100 million songs on any device, anywhere in the world. Less ownership, more access. That is the shift toward usage. And the question now is how we can extend that idea to everything people need, especially where ownership is not necessary or not even possible.

Christian Eichenberger is CEO of Rent.Group, where he brings circular design into temporary interior solutions. From events and trade fairs to workplace concepts, the company focuses on saving resources and energy while designing products so they can stay in continuous use within a circular system.

Rent.Group is a leading enabler of temporary ownership and circular use. It also acts as a driver of change toward a broader circular sharing society, aiming to create environmental and social value.
