Democracy is not a natural state; it requires a constant engagement with the lessons of history as well as an unwavering commitment to democratic principles. This engagement can also take a performative form, which is why one can explore Germany’s contradictory and fragile history of democracy by bouncing around in the anti-fascist bouncy castle.

It is modeled after Hambach Castle and thus represents a place with a contradictory history. Hambach Castle was the venue for the Hambach Festival of 1832; it is considered the “cradle of German democracy” and is simultaneously used by the far right to narrate an alternative German history that ignores the crimes of National Socialism. For the WDC, Hambach Castle is combined with a symbol from speculative design. The aim is to raise awareness that the far right also exploits design methods for its historical revisionism and to create a space for reflecting on strategies to counter this co-optation.

The bouncy castle by Frieder Bohaumilitzky will be set up in the WDC Hub and can be used by guests of all ages at their own risk. The Hub is also available as a place to relax and linger.

Frieder Bohaumilitzky is a designer, political scientist, and curator. He curates exhibitions, intervenes in institutions, and explores the relationship between material culture and political systems, with a focus on the political strategies of the New Right. Bohaumilitzky earned his doctorate from the HFBK Hamburg; prior to that, he studied political science at the University of Hamburg, as well as design at the HFBK Hamburg and the Bezalel Academy of Arts & Design in Jerusalem.
