The exhibition Unter der Haut aims to show that tattoos are a widespread form of expression that connects people from diverse backgrounds. The challenge lies in selecting tattoos that not only spark questions about aesthetic developments but also open up access to current social debates about tattooing.

With Unter der Haut, various activities are planned to promote an exchange on tattooing that has so far received little attention—bringing together expert teams from different disciplines and fostering a design-oriented discourse. For example, people who tattoo or are tattooed might engage in public conversations with cultural studies scholars or medical professionals. Within the framework of MISHPOCHA, musical events in collaboration with the Jewish Museum are also being considered.

The aim of the exhibition is to highlight tattooing as an expression of self-determination. A wide audience will be able to experience the personal stories and memories conveyed through tattoos. In addition, a digital “picture book” is planned, giving anyone interested the opportunity to record and share the personal story behind their tattoo.

As part of the World Design Capital 2026, the Kunst- und Kulturstiftung Opelvillen Rüsselsheim will participate in the interdisciplinary project MISHPOCHA: The Art of Collaboration, initiated, among others, by the Jewish Museum Frankfurt.
