Self Political Publishing
HfG Offenbach
How were publications used in labour disputes, in the women's movement of the 1970s and in many other political struggles? Is a post on social media self-publishing? Which political camps use self-initiated publishing today?
This event examines the role of self-publishing as a political tool. Left-wing, self-initiated publications were an important tool in labour disputes, the women's movement of the 1970s and many other situations in which social change was fought for. Today, it seems that the enemies of democracy are more likely to use this tool – in digital or analogue form – to shift social sentiment in their favour with disinformation. Together with design students, political science students and other political institutions, this topic will be addressed and summarised in an exhibition and a symposium. Although there is a large and active self-publishing scene, it is largely apolitical. In contrast, protagonists of the new right are very active in misusing the media for their propaganda. Can anything be done to change this? The event aims to inform and motivate a young target group to use the means of self-initiated publishing to engage in political discourse, strengthen democracy and reduce discrimination.
