With the reconstruction of Frankfurt’s Neue Altstadt, the city was given back its heart. An exhibition in public space showcases this site—shaped by democratic processes—along with its history and the key actors involved.
With its eventful history spanning many centuries, Frankfurt's old town has been shaped by changes triggered by internal and external influences. Completed six years ago, the reconstruction of the ensemble of buildings between the cathedral and the Römer stands like no other current urban development project for living democracy, open participation and the preservation and communication of history in an urban context. The ‘New Old Town’ is the result of civic engagement, which, following public debate and in cooperation with politicians and the city administration, has become a place of identification for the urban community and an attraction for visitors from all over the world.
Embedded in an urban landscape with distinctive cultural monuments, offering art and city chronicles, with places for discourse and the communication of democracy, the ‘New Old Town’ forms the centre of a thematic and spatial network and also offers authentic history communication and a lively culture of remembrance through the design of the buildings and their arrangement on the historic city layout. The exhibition along the coronation route offers a glimpse into the chronicle of the project and the location in the context of Frankfurt's history.
