Lampionfeste
To mark its 100th anniversary, from 2025 to 2030, the ideas and urban spaces of New Frankfurt will be brought back to life and celebrated together.
Inspired by the lantern festivals of that era, streets, squares and gardens will shine in new light, offering a low-threshold opportunity to immerse oneself in the history, design and contemporary living environment of the housing projects of Ernst May and his companions.
The events, initiated by the City of Frankfurt in cooperation with the German Architecture Museum (DAM) and Urban Media Project, will originate from the housing estate itself: developed in collaboration with local initiatives, they will thrive on the commitment of the neighbourhood, which will shape the programme and design of the festivals. The festival brings local people together with interested guests and presents the housing estates as a living space and architectural heritage. Architectural tours, a festival grounds, a stage and communal meals create a setting in which the past and present meet. Digital formats complement the programme and convey the building's history to a wide audience. The lantern festivals raise awareness of the housing estates and open them up for exchange.
The lantern festivals are a project of the City of Frankfurt, coordinated by the German Architecture Museum (DAM) in cooperation with Urban Media Projekt and supported by the City Marketing Department. They bring together the past and the present and let the streets and squares of the settlements shine in a new light.
