Demokratisierung der Straße

2026

Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences

The project Democratization of the Street is dedicated to the fair transformation of public street space in Frankfurt am Main.

The current allocation of space, heavily dominated by motorized individual traffic, limits possibilities of use for pedestrians, cyclists, and other urban residents. The project’s goal is to develop alternative usage concepts that make street space accessible as an inclusive urban space for everyone.

To this end, students at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Jan Dieterle and Studio Jonathan Radetz, design concepts such as pop-up parks or mobile spaces on parking lots and implement them through interventions and prototypes, making them tangible and visible. Through seminars, transdisciplinary events, and workshops, both students and local residents are actively involved in testing and experimenting.

The project demonstrates how democratic processes and participatory design can lead to socially fairer and more sustainable urban spaces.
