Demokratie pflanzen
The occasion is WDC 2026, which will place Frankfurt and the region under the guiding theme Design for Democracy for an entire year. Design is understood here not merely as aesthetic form-making, but as a social process of shaping our shared environment.
Gardens and parks provide ideal points of connection: as freely accessible green spaces, they are places of community, collective creativity, and participation – and thus fundamental building blocks of a vibrant democracy.
Accompanying the annual theme, a seven-part focus series will take place at various locations throughout the region, featuring guided tours, performances, and hands-on activities that make democracy tangible in green spaces. In addition, the series “Visiting the Award-Winning Gardens” will be presented in cooperation with the Regionalverband Frankfurt RheinMain. Award-winning climate- and insect-friendly gardens will be open to visitors; they were honored in the “Blühende Gärten 2025” photo competition. The series highlights how flourishing biodiversity and civic engagement can go hand in hand.
Numerous institutions and initiatives are involved in the GartenRheinMain network. More than 700 events invite people to experience nature, foster dialogue and participation, and are brought together in the “GartenRheinMain” programme brochure and the online event calendar.
