Thinking of Space Musically

Global migration, climate change, and economic as well as political crises are pushing conventional urban planning approaches to their limits. The city increasingly loses the characteristics of a homogeneous entity and instead fragments into diverse material constellations of situated action. Within this context, Christopher Dell’s lecture performance reframes his concept of musical spatial thinking. He will present elements of his current research projects, “Dialogue Concerts: Conceptual Research on Architecture and Music” and “Space and Action.”

The lecture will be held in English.

Christopher Dell (Prof. Dr. phil. habil.) works as a theorist of urbanism and architecture, as well as a composer, musician, and artist, based in Berlin, Bergen, and Copenhagen. He is Professor of Architectural Theory at the Bergen School of Architecture (BAS), Norway. Previously, he served as Professor of Urban Design Theory at HafenCity University Hamburg and at the Technical University of Munich, and held the Chair of Urban Design and Urban Renewal at the Berlin University of the Arts.

The Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics investigates why and how people create art and how they perform, experience, and evaluate it. The Institute’s focus is on music, but we also engage with other performing arts such as dance and film.

The venue is accessible.
