Wiesbaden’s thermal springs have shaped the city’s history and identity for thousands of years – yet today, many of them have disappeared from public awareness. This thematic day invites visitors to rediscover Wiesbaden’s hidden water heritage and reflect together on the role of the springs in urban development, culture and a sustainable future. Guided tours, a presentation and panel discussions connect historical perspectives with current ideas and explore how thermal water can be used as a resource for a liveable and climate-neutral city in the future.

Programme

14:00 – Guided tour of Wiesbaden’s thermal springs
(approx. 1 hour)
The tour offers a new perspective on Wiesbaden’s hidden identity and invites participants to rediscover thermal water as a living resource and an integral part of public space. Contemporary witnesses are invited to contribute their own memories, photographs and documents to the city’s water history.

17:30 – Presentation: “A New Bubbling Heart” – Proposal for the Transformation of Kochbrunnenplatz
In his Bachelor’s thesis in architecture, Moritz Petrasch explores how Kochbrunnenplatz could become a vibrant place centred around thermal water once again. The presentation introduces a design proposal that reimagines the springs as a bathing site, energy source and public meeting place, and discusses how Wiesbaden’s historic heart could become visible and accessible again.

18:30 – Panel discussion: “Grown with All Waters” – The Role of Thermal Springs in Wiesbaden’s Urban Development
Wiesbaden is home to a unique landscape of thermal springs that has shaped the city’s development for thousands of years. The panel discussion explores the springs as part of the city’s identity and asks how Wiesbaden can rediscover and strengthen its role as a “city of springs”.

19:30 – Panel discussion: “Climate-Neutral Heat for Wiesbaden – Opportunities of Urban Geothermal Energy”
Wiesbaden’s thermal springs offer unique geothermal potential for a sustainable heat supply. Experts discuss the opportunities and challenges of using thermal water as a resource for the city’s energy transition and explore the contribution it could make on the path towards climate neutrality.
