Sonja Yakovleva – Disneyland
What happens when art is not hung on the wall as an individual piece, but instead occupies the entire space? For Freitagsküche, Sonja Yakovleva has created a wallpaper that completely encompasses the dining area. As a result, her art is not viewed from a distance; it forms the environment in which people eat, drink, work, converse, and celebrate.
This connection with a functional space is precisely what matters. The wallpaper does not remain pristine: tables and chairs stand before it, people move along it, and light, sound, and scent alter its perception. Art and everyday life can no longer be separated.
Yakovleva’s works combine ornamental richness and craftsmanship with humor, physical desire, and inquiries into power and societal roles. Her visual worlds appear seductive, playful, and at times exaggerated—yet they are never mere decoration. Beneath their sensory surface, they negotiate self-determination, labor, body images, and social hierarchies.
With "Disneyland", Freitagsküche itself becomes a visual space: for a few months, it transforms into a walk-in artwork where art does not appear protected and motionless, but becomes part of daily life.
