With Sesame Treat, artist Ute Ritschel presents an Eat Art performance that originated from her artistic field research conducted during the Yatoo Artists Residency in October 2014.
Inspired by the beauty and perfection of the tiny sesame seed, she developed a public performance for the villagers in Wongol, South Korea. The surrounding landscape, with its mountains, streams, bridges, rice fields and perilla plants, was transformed into an edible installation.
Sesame seeds, leaves, spices, food and sweets serve as artistic materials to give the hilly landscape a new form. The performance combines nature observation, communal experience and Eat Art into a sensory exploration of food, landscape and memory.
At its heart is the sesame as an everyday companion: as a foodstuff, a medicinal plant and a sweet delicacy – as a Sesame Treat. After the performance, the edible creation is enjoyed together.
