The fourth sam DesignDialog explores the role of museums in city centres. Guests from Frankfurt, Chemnitz, and Hamburg will present museums and urban concepts that rethink how cultural institutions can engage with public life.

How can city centres be revitalised? What role can museums play in shaping vibrant urban spaces? And how can museums become open, accessible places that are closely connected to everyday life in the city? As part of the World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026, the sam DesignDialog brings together perspectives from different cities at the WerkRaum Wiesbaden. The focus is on museums that are developing new approaches within existing urban structures — places that foster participation, exchange, and social dialogue. Against the backdrop of vacancy, changing patterns of use, and shifting demands on urban space, museums are increasingly positioning themselves as active parts of the city: places for encounter, discussion, and collective reflection.

What new impulses can museums create for urban life?
How can they contribute to revitalising city centres?
And what could this mean for Wiesbaden and its city museum?

The sam DesignDialog invites participants to rethink the museum — in Wiesbaden, the sam – Stadtmuseum am Markt — not as an isolated cultural institution, but as an active and visible part of the city itself.

The City Museum on the Market Square: A museum for urban society that takes a look back at current social issues in a barrier-free, inclusive and participatory manner.
