Data is often referred to as the oil of the 21st century – and information as the central resource of digital societies. But who collects, controls and uses these ever-growing volumes of data? What power dynamics arise from the concentration of knowledge, data and algorithmic decision-making power? And what are the social costs associated with the accumulation of information?

The second event in the series Design in the Accumulocean explores the interplay between information, power and accumulation. Building on insights from Gesa Focken and Christian Djeffal, the discussion will examine how digital infrastructures give rise to new forms of knowledge concentration, what challenges this poses for democracy, privacy and participation, and how information systems can be designed more equitably.
