Globalisation, deindustrialisation and trade wars, on the one hand, alongside technological progress and the shift towards a service- and leisure-oriented society, on the other, are key factors explaining the decline of industrial production in both urban and rural areas. This decline is not merely evident in isolated cases, but has recently become palpable through the rise in vacant premises in city centres and on the outskirts. Conversely, the trend towards craft and artistic production – which has gained momentum since the COVID-19 pandemic – is on the rise again.

To what extent can the legacy of the functional city, with its separation of sectors, or the existing (re-)urban mix respond to current developments and future challenges?

The New Leipzig Charter (2020) and its dimensions of action – the just, green and productive city – set out the guidelines for sustainable urban regeneration that is also oriented towards the common good. What characterises the ‘productive city’, and how is it experienced in architectural and spatial terms?

The productive city is characterised by the synthesis of traditional industrial sites and innovative mixed-use urban structures. Public spaces are undergoing a multi-faceted transformation and serve as venues for social interaction. The urban development vision encompasses a fine-grained mix of uses at the building, neighbourhood and district levels. Open spatial typologies and hybrid architectures ensure a high degree of functional diversity. This development is facilitated by modern manufacturing technologies, changing demand for local produce, craft workshops, urban farming and decentralised urban energy systems.

The conference explores integrated approaches that contribute to sustainable transformation and ‘(r-)urban resilience’. Together with international experts, the various concepts and recommendations for action will be presented, and policy guidelines discussed.
