As part of WDC 2026, students from the Product Design Department at the Brüder Grimm Vocational Academy Hanau (BGBA Hanau – University of Cooperative Education) are presenting the Hanau3Places project—a participatory urban design initiative that centers on the question: “How do we want to live in Hanau?”
Starting from the desire for livable, collaboratively designed urban spaces, the students have developed new ideas over the past few months to enhance the quality of life, foster interaction, and promote sustainable urban design in the heart of Hanau.
The result is a series of temporary design elements on the market square that revitalize public space and enable new forms of social interaction. At the heart of the project was direct exchange with the urban community. Through workshops, walks, design interventions, and discussion forums, the students engaged in a creative dialogue with citizens, local initiatives, educational institutions, the administration, and residents about the future of urban coexistence.
Hanau3Places views design not merely as a creative practice, but as a tool for social participation, dialogue, and sustainable urban development. “As a university in Hanau, we see it as our mission to actively help shape the future of our city. Hanau3Places demonstrates how students, together with citizens, can develop new ideas for livable public spaces,” explains Prof. Kai Linke
The artwork will be on display at Hanau’s Marktplatz through the end of October 2026. The public opening will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. as part of Hanauer Marktzeit and will feature live music and games. The project is part of the official programme of World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026.
