Wealth in Germany is distributed extremely unevenly. The wealthiest 10 percent of society receives half of all inheritances and gifts and benefits from low tax rates. Due to extensive exemptions for ultra-wealthy companies, enormous sums are passed on almost tax-free.
The money that does not flow into the national budget could be invested in education, infrastructure, research, and climate protection, thereby benefiting all citizens as well as the economy.
That is why an open debate on a more equitable inheritance and gift tax is urgently needed. Together with Dr. Kai Eicker-Wolf of DGB Hessen-Thüringen and Dr. Franziska Vollmer, an expert in social and tax law, we would like to discuss the current situation and possible measures to achieve tax justice.
