Deine Orte der Demokratiegeschichte – Hanau
April 2026
Stadt Hanau und Stiftung Orte der deutschen Demokratiegeschichte
From 23 June 2026, the open-air exhibition ‘Your Places of Democratic History’ will be on display in five city centre squares in Hanau.
The open-air exhibition will showcase key themes relating to equality, civil society, constitutions, elections and European perspectives. Hanau offers a particularly historic location for this: it was here that the Hanau Ultimatum, a key document of the revolution, was drafted in 1848, and it was in the Walloon-Dutch Church that the first German Gymnastics Federation was founded in 1849 – an early symbol of civic engagement and political participation. The exhibition ties in with these local stories of freedom and invites visitors to discover the building sites of democracy then and now – as places where people stood up for freedom, co-determination and justice.
The exhibition can be viewed at various locations in Hanau city centre: Schlossplatz, Altstädter Markt, Neustädter Markt, the square by the Walloon-Dutch Church and Freiheitsplatz.
The Foundation for the Sites of German Democracy commemorates the long, diverse and often ambivalent history of democracy in Germany. We show how democracy was fought for, shaped, defended and often lost again by real people in specific places
