Democracy is constantly ‘under construction’. The exhibition project takes up this idea and uses the construction sites in our cities as a starting point to remind us that democracy has always been reshaped, defended and lived.

Democracy needs places where it can be seen, experienced and understood. The exhibition tells the story of historical and symbolic locations where people have stood up for freedom, pluralism and co-determination. These places connect the past, present and future and show that every individual can make a difference – they encourage people to actively shape democracy and take a stand. Topics such as equality, political civil society, protests, constitutions, elections and the European and global context make it an open place of learning about lived and organised democracy.

And you can be part of it! We are looking for venues, initiatives, associations and organisations – in cities and rural areas – that are interested in hosting the exhibition. The modular travelling exhibition presents key aspects and locations in German democratic history and can be easily combined with standard construction fencing. It can be picked up free of charge from the foundation, ordered by post (approx. £85 depending on size) or individually printed on request (approx. £170 per theme set). If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Paula Riechardt at the Foundation for German Democracy History at p.riechardt@dnb.de or by telephone on +49 (0)69 1525-1253.

The Foundation for the Sites of German Democracy commemorates the long, diverse and often ambivalent history of democracy in Germany. We show how democracy was fought for, shaped, defended and often lost again by real people in specific places.
